Why Symbols Work So Well in Instagram Bios
Instagram gives you 150 characters for your bio. Most people use every character for words — but the accounts with the most polished-looking bios often use symbols and decorative characters to separate sections, add visual texture, and guide the eye through the content.
These aren't emoji (though emoji work too). They're Unicode symbols — characters that are part of the standard text encoding used by every device. They're tinier, more precise, and more diverse than emoji, and they blend naturally with text in a way emoji sometimes don't.
Stars and Celestial Symbols
Stars and celestial symbols are the most popular category for aesthetic bios:
- ✦ ✧ ✩ ✪ ✫ ✬ ✭ ✮ ✯ ✰ — Decorative stars in various styles
- ★ ☆ — Classic five-pointed stars
- ⋆ · ˚ — Tiny stars and dots for subtle decoration
- ☾ ☽ ◐ ◑ — Moon phases and crescent symbols
- ☀ ☁ ⚡ — Sun, cloud, and lightning
These work especially well as section dividers: ✦ your name ✦ or as decoration around key words.
Flowers and Nature Symbols
- ✿ ❀ ❁ ✾ — Decorative flower symbols
- ⚘ ✽ — More flower variants
- ❧ — Floral heart pointing hand
- 🌿 ☘ — Leaf symbols (these are emoji but blend well)
Hearts and Love Symbols
- ♥ ♡ — Filled and outline hearts
- ❤ ❥ ❣ — Decorative heart variations
- ⋯ ≋ ˜ — Wave and continuation symbols
Crowns, Diamonds, and Luxury Symbols
- ♛ ♕ — Chess queen symbols (popular "crown" alternatives)
- ◆ ◇ ◈ ⬥ — Diamond shapes
- ⟡ ✦ ⊹ — Star and sparkle variants
Arrows and Separators
- → ← ↑ ↓ — Simple directional arrows
- ► ◄ — Filled arrows
- │ ┃ ‖ — Vertical line separators
- — – · | — Horizontal separators
- « » ‹ › — Decorative quotation angles
How to Use Symbols in Your Bio
As section dividers
Between lines of your bio, add a row of symbols to visually separate sections:
Your Name
✦ · · · ✦ · · · ✦
What you do
As decorative brackets
Frame a line with matching symbols on both sides:
✿ lifestyle creator ✿
◆ Los Angeles ◆
As bullet replacements
Instead of using plain text dashes, use symbols as list markers:
✦ photography
✦ travel
✦ coffee
Symbols That Work vs. Symbols That Don't
Most Unicode symbols display correctly on all modern phones. However, some very obscure characters may show as a small square on older devices. The safest symbols are those in the basic Unicode symbol blocks — the ones listed in this article all have excellent support on both iPhone and Android.
Avoid rare historical scripts or extremely niche Unicode blocks if you need guaranteed display everywhere.
Where Else These Symbols Work
The same symbols work in TikTok bios, Twitter/X bios and display names, WhatsApp About, Discord display names and bios, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit usernames, and essentially anywhere that accepts text input.
