Discord Usernames vs. Display Names
Before diving in, it's important to understand the difference between Discord's two types of names:
- Username — Your unique handle (like @yourusername). Discord has strict character limits here and many special characters are not allowed. This is used for searching and adding friends.
- Display Name (Server Nickname) — The name that appears next to your messages in a server. This has much more flexibility and supports a wide range of Unicode characters including fancy fonts, symbols, and special styles.
Most of the techniques in this article apply to your display name and server nickname, not your core username.
Best Unicode Styles for Discord Display Names
Bold Sans-Serif
𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 — Clean, strong, very readable. One of the most popular choices because it looks intentionally different without being hard to read. Works well for gaming communities and general servers.
Small Caps
ʏᴏᴜʀɴᴀᴍᴇ — Small caps have a refined, sophisticated quality. Popular in writing communities, design servers, and anywhere with a more mature aesthetic.
Script / Cursive
𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇𝒩𝒶𝓂𝑒 — Elegant and distinctive. Works well for creative and artistic communities. Stands out in the member list because almost no one else will have this style.
Gothic / Blackletter
𝔜𝔬𝔲𝔯𝔑𝔞𝔪𝔢 — The old German blackletter style. Very popular in gaming and metal/alternative communities. Highly distinctive but harder to read.
Monospace
𝚈𝚘𝚞𝚛𝙽𝚊𝚖𝚎 — The fixed-width typewriter font. Popular in coding and tech communities. Has a clean, technical aesthetic.
Adding Symbols to Your Discord Name
Combine styled text with symbols for a more complete look:
- ✦ 𝒴𝑜𝓊𝓇𝒩𝒶𝓂𝑒 ✦ — Stars framing a cursive name
- ⟨ 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 ⟩ — Angle brackets around a bold name
- ⚔ 𝔜𝔬𝔲𝔯𝔑𝔞𝔪𝔢 ⚔ — Swords framing a Gothic name
- 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙉𝙖𝙢𝙚 ↯ — A name with a lightning bolt at the end

Tips for Discord Names
Keep it readable
In Discord's dense text chat interface, names that are too stylized become hard to read quickly. Someone tagging you with @name needs to be able to find and spell it. Very decorative styles work better as a display name that people see, not a username they have to type.
Match your server's culture
A Gothic blackletter name fits well in a gaming server but would look out of place in a professional community Discord or a homework help server. Match the formality and aesthetic of the community you're in.
Character limits
Discord display names have a 32-character limit. Unicode styled characters are each one character, so a 10-letter name in bold Unicode is still 10 characters — the limit works the same way as regular text.
Do These Styles Work in Discord on Mobile?
Yes. Discord's mobile app supports Unicode display names exactly the same as the desktop app. Your styled name will appear correctly on iOS, Android, and all desktop platforms.
